I became involved with The New York Foundling several years ago.  Their list of services and evidence-based programs seem to grow each and every year.  All are so very important and some are more immediate than others.  Initially my involvement with The Foundling was general in nature, however, as the topic of education becomes more important, I wanted to direct my support to educational services. From private tutoring for children involved in The Foundling’s foster care system to providing youth with after-school programs, The Foundling’s educational services put children on the right track once their more immediate needs are met.

Without these opportunities, life skills and an education, making your way in the real world can be quite challenging.  Michael Zink (Program Director) and his team of tutors go above and beyond to ensure the children they work with have the tools and support they need to navigate their way in the classroom and beyond.  Whether it’s help with schoolwork, an advocate with various resources or an ear to listen and offer encouragement, Michael and his team are there. They are very engaged and become a part of their students’ everyday lives as an additional source of support and stability.

A few years ago we talked about structuring a way to give college students additional support.  And so the annual college advancement stipend began where recipients show commitment to furthering their education.  Funds are distributed each semester to select students and used for a variety of reasons (e.g., book purchases, expenses that might require them to work additional hours and distract from their studies, etc.).  The entire purpose is to help remove roadblocks on their road to success.

I hear how the students are doing throughout the year and am always so impressed with their progress and achievements.  Higher GPAs, new jobs they excel at, and tackling a different college major are just some examples.  To see the tangible impact of educational services is nothing short of life changing for some of the participants.  Educational services teach students the value of hard-work and commitment but also gives them the safety net and support they need to move ahead.

I feel so honored to support this initiative and urge others to help the Foundling expand this and other educational service offerings.

Guest bloggers are welcome to write about their involvement with The Foundling and the programs and services that mean the most to them. If you are interested in sharing why you support The Foundling, please email communications@nyfoundling.org. We hope to hear from you soon!

“We are more than just a service; we become a part of the family system.”

-Karmia Berry, Assistant Vice President FOCUS Program

The Foundling’s program for individuals with developmental disabilities offers many different resources and services for clients and their families in New York City and surrounding counties. Their newest program, Families Offering Care and Unconditional Support (FOCUS), recently celebrated their 1 year anniversary at The Foundling. FOCUS provides hands-on training for children and parents at home, and is designed to keep children at home and away from residence programs. FOCUS uses an approach to care that is evidence-based and built upon the Novel Interventions in Children’s Healthcare (NICH) Model. FOCUS reached 40 families in its first year and achieved the following outcomes:

  • Reduced hospitalization of children by 94%.
  • Placed youth with developmental disabilities in schools that were better equipped to meet their needs.
  • Transitioned youth with developmental disabilities from home-schooling to a community-school setting, giving them more opportunities and resources to learn and grow.
  • Encouraged kids who were not attending school to return to the classroom.

“We plan to reach more families in 2016 and look forward to telling more people in the community about the benefits of FOCUS,” said Karmia Berry, assistant vice president of The Foundling’s program for individuals with developmental disabilities.

It’s easy to get focused on the idea that Valentine’s Day is all about romance, but it’s important to remember that it’s “LOVE” not romance, that “conquers all.” Love comes in all shapes and sizes, love knows no boundaries, love is respect, generosity, kindness and compassion. It extends all the way to family, friends, children, neighbors, mentors and pets, and continues beyond what the eye can see.

This Valentine’s Day remember to LOVE:

Live: It’s sometimes scary to put yourself out there and explain how much you care for friends, family, and mentors. But be brave! A turtle only gets ahead by sticking its neck out, and so you should too.

Opportunity: Take the opportunity to donate to others. Instead of going out to dinner or buying expensive gifts this Valentine’s, make dinner at home and donate what you would have spent to a favorite charity or cause.

Value: Tell each important person in your life how much you value and believe in them. A few positive words such as “FABULOUS!” “BRAVO!” and “YOU’RE SENSATIONAL!” can go a long way.

Empathy: Carry around extra Valentine’s Day cards and pass them onto someone who seems down. Your card could be the special pick-me-up that person needs to have a brighter day.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day this year? Let us know on our Facebook page!

The Foundling offers dynamic and progressive services and programs to 30,000 children and families each year, but what makes each of our programs so unique and successful are our employees and staff.  Everyone who works at The Foundling is motivated, passionate, caring, creative, strong and goal-oriented.

Get to know the people inside our organization by reading our blog each week as we highlight a new staff member.  We’ll ask them questions about their role at The Foundling, what their passions and hobbies are outside of the office, and recognize their achievements and accomplishments

How does your department help the people and communities we serve?

The Adoption & Legal and Record Information Department helps many people in a myriad of ways. We help create permanent families through adoption when children cannot be returned to their biological parents.  We also accomplish permanency through the Kinship Guardianship Assistance Program (KinGAP) where we assist family members in obtaining guardianship of their family members. The Foundling also maintains a database of adoptions dating back to the 1800s! From these records people who were adopted or in care at all can find some information about their history.

What has driven you to be where you are today?

This is a hard question to answer. In a nutshell, I do it for the children we serve. This is a highly stressful position in that we are severing biological ties in some cases to be able to make permanent forever families for the children. Before this I was an adoption Social Worker and the joy and emotions the children and adoptive families shared with me during the adoption process continuously reminds me of why I do what I do, and will continue to do.

What inspires you most about working at The Foundling?

This is another difficult question. In all honesty there are times when I am very uninspired and it becomes difficult. There are constant changes that have to be adapted to, whether you agree with them or not. So, at times, I do not feel I have a voice. Then, on the other hand, the inspiration from my colleagues always pulls me through and inspires me to keep up the good fight. Since this position has pulled me away from direct contact with the people we serve, I rely heavily on my colleagues.

If you could take a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Italy! I fell in love with Italy while watching “Under the Tuscan Sun” and have wanted to visit the country ever since.

Tell us about the latest book you’re reading?

The last book I completed was John Grisham’s “Gray Mountain”. I am a huge fan and have read all of his books, except “Skipping Christmas.”

What is your spirit animal and why?

I would be a cat! They are very patient, beautiful and intuitive.

  • Hold Your Own Drive: Help collect various in-kind items needed by our programs, including gift cards, school and baby supplies. These are easy to do and valued by programs to offset some of their greatest cost. Great for individuals or groups!
  • Kids helping Kids: Too young to volunteer but still interested in giving back? Host a drive at your school or community center to benefit the children and families in our care.

Long winter days (and those even longer winter nights) drive many of us into cabin fever hibernation mode. After braving the brutal weather, people are often tempted to choose more warm, indulgent, and highly caloric meals. Comfort foods don’t have to be a guilty pleasure! By tweaking recipes and making small substitutions in the kitchen, you can create amazing and comforting dishes without sacrificing flavor.

The New York Foundling’s Developmental Disabilities Program uses a scrumptious seasonal winter menu in their homes. We work hard to create fun, tasty, nutritious recipes that are perfect after a blustery cold day. Little tricks include using low fat dairy products, choosing leaner protein sources, and of course adding veggies in unsuspecting places. Instead of frying, bake! Drink a nice big mug of hot tea with lemon and honey before your meals to help curb your appetite and stay warm. The possibilities are endless.

Go ahead and try these healthy comfort food recipes that come straight from our menu!

We all strive to impact our communities in a positive light. But sometimes it may feel daunting to find the perfect opportunity.  At The Foundling, there are myriad of ways to get involved and help out! In this 3-part series, we will share how a little bit of time and energy can make a huge difference for the 30,000 children and families served by The Foundling each year.

  • Young Mothers Support: Help care for young children and babies while their mothers are working or completing their schoolwork.
  • Build Baby Bundles: Assemble care bundles with necessities for new families; include items like diapers, wipes, bottles, new clothes & infant formula. (This is a great opportunity for groups!)
  • Host Your Personal Baby Shower & Donate: Are you having a baby? Congratulations! It’s exciting and fun to celebrate the birth of a baby with a baby shower but some moms having their second and third children feel that they do not need more supplies, clothing or gear. A great solution is to ask guests to bring new baby items for one of the babies in The Foundling’s care instead!
  • Foster Parent Appreciation: Support Foundling staff by helping to coordinate and manage the annual appreciation party, giving well-deserved thanks to foster parents in Foundling homes.
  • Join Our Lunch List: Share what you do with our kids! Host a Foundling teen for an afternoon at your office where they can experience firsthand the ins and outs of your professional life.

Employees gathered at 27 Christopher Street, once known as The Vincent J. Fontana Center for a movie “under the stars” as a last hurrah and final goodbye to the beloved building and all it encompassed. Foundling staff brought blankets and pillows from home and settled in to watch Home Alone 2 and enjoy a low-key evening with colleagues.

Dr. Mel Schneiderman and Sister Carol remarked about the history of 27 Christopher Street. Though the building itself was built in 1911, it was established as The Vincent J. Fontana Center for Child Protection in 1999 by The New York Foundling to honor Dr. Fontana’s contributions to the field of child abuse prevention. 27 Christopher Street also served as a Catholic Elementary School, a nursing school and in its later years, it served as a multi-purpose office and meeting center for many of the Foundling’s staff from varying programs and departments.

Though 27 Christopher Street is officially closed, the love, strength, and passion to aid underserved children & families lives strong in our staff and the community.

“Family is Love.”
