In many communities, there is a lack of understanding and resources to support mental health, which means problems frequently go unnoticed or unaddressed until they rise to the level of crisis. Just as the stability of a table is what makes it functional, the mental health of children is what enables them to function well in all areas of life. A wobbly table can be fixed with anything from a sugar packet to a team of specialists, just as the interventions needed to support the mental health of a child can vary from simple to complex.

Our health and behavioral health services support children and adolescents who have experienced poverty, crises, abuse, and family stress in their home and community to help them manage their challenges in the context of their everyday lives. Using evidence-based approaches and employing highly-trained medical and mental health professionals, our programs meet people where they are, and create stability as they address their health needs.

On any given day, approximately 400,000 young people in the U.S. are in foster care. Many of these resilient young people face seemingly insurmountable challenges, including homelessness, lower high school and college graduation rates, incarceration, and difficulty securing stable employment. The Foundling helps youth in foster care overcome these obstacles by providing case management, therapeutic interventions, and supportive housing, as well as specialized training for foster parents and birth parents. With the right support, these young people can beat the odds.

Mental health challenges can affect school-age children and youth in many different ways, and parents and teachers are often unaware of the signs of mental health issues and how best to respond to them. Our school- and community-based programs treat children where they are, helping them to fully focus and engage in academics and other enriching school activities.
