Youth and families involved in The New York Foundling’s Families Offering Care and Unconditional Support (FOCUS) Program participated in our first Stay FOCUSed: Summer Reading Challenge!

This past June, 25 youth received their own personal reading log, a recommended reading list and a package of age-appropriate books to read over the summer. The challenge was intended to help combat summer learning loss and to instill a love of reading for fun. All participants, ages 5-16, had a combined total of 121 hours of reading this summer and everyone received a certificate for completing the challenge!

“One of my son’s favorite books is Mufaros Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale by John Stepto. He enjoyed this story so much because it teaches you to be kind to others and to treat people how you want to be treated” –Amanda, Staten Island.

Special shout-out: We would like to recognize Enrique R., for reading 19 hours this summer!

Summer Reading at The Foundling for FOCUS

Thank you to the FOCUS Interventionists and Skills Trainers at The Foundling for capturing pictures of the youth enjoying their new collection of books.

Children in the child welfare system face unique educational challenges. Repeated moves from one foster home to another often mean a change in schools. For children in New York City’s child welfare system, including foster care, building trust with adults requires special sensitivity. Issues like poor nutrition, a lack of health care, and absent or incarcerated parents affect every aspect of the lives of these children and the level of support they need at school.

Haven Academy continues to break barriers and reach new heights. This summer it was awarded a 2016-2019 New York State Charter School Dissemination Grant which is a federally funded grant that will enable Haven Academy to document and share its school’s culture and trauma sensitive design with the broader public school community.  Only eight schools were selected for this great honor!

In addition, this year’s New York State test results illustrate how Haven Academy has exceeded the norm:

  • Surpassed all comparison groups in math by nearly 30 percentage points on average.
  • Surpassed the district results on all tests
  • 3rd graders surpassed all comparison groups in both English Language Arts and Math percent proficient.

We are also very proud to announce that The Foundling’s Haven Academy was highlighted in Richard Whitmire’s latest book The Founders: Inside the Revolution to Invent and Reinvent America’s Best Charter Schools. Whitmire explores the narrative and practices of today’s “high-performing public charter schools — the game changers, the best of the best, the top 20 percent.”

Accompanying the book is an online video series which includes an interview with Jessica Nauiokas, Haven Academy’s principal. She shares advice to recent educators, reveals the school’s concept behind its design and explains the school’s history. When speaking about the origin of Mott Haven Academy, Nauiokas recalled that “Bill Baccaglini from The Foundling recognized that kids in the child welfare system are underserved under traditional education systems, and we needed to do something that was different. And together, The Foundling team put together the plan for Haven Academy.”

About Mott Haven Academy:

Established in 2008, Mott Haven Academy Charter School, more commonly known as Haven Academy, serves 290 student ‘scholars’ in grades K-5, and 36 pre-kindergarten students in the South Bronx. One third of our students are in foster care, one third are involved with a foster care prevention program, and one third reside in one of the nation’s most impoverished congressional districts, Mott Haven.

The Foundling is excited and proud to see what the future has in store for all our student ‘scholars’ at Mott Haven Academy and wish the best for this coming school year!

Who Should I Include On My Adoption Team?

5 Key Players That Enhance The Journey

Adopting a child is a monumental decision for you and your family and it’s just the start of a long journey to bringing home your new family member. To make the process as smooth as possible, it’s vital to carefully choose your adoption team and understand the roles they’ll play.

When forming your adoption team, make sure that you fill the spots with individuals who support your wants and needs. Know ahead of time what kind of adoption you’re interested in, and be honest with yourself about your limitations. Think through race and culture differences, gender, special needs, and whether you want an open or closed adoption. Set your convictions on those issues and stick to them. It’s in the best interest of your family and your child-to-be. Once you’ve made those decisions, choose players that will work within the parameters you’ve set.

Here are some of the players that you’ll need to get in place as early in the process as possible:

Adoption Agency or Attorney – Perhaps the most important key player in the adoption process is the agency or attorney you choose to help you navigate the steps of adopting. Agencies and attorneys operate basically the same, with a few key differences, the main one being the manner in which a child is located. Expecting mothers considering adoption get in touch with agencies directly, while attorneys help adoptive families advertise in order to get in touch with birth mothers. Also, know your state laws regarding adoption, as some states have restrictions on both.

Aside from the differences, both an agency or an attorney will help you prepare the extensive paperwork and legal requirements for a fee. You’ll find a large range of fees, some exceeding $40,000, so it’s important to know your budget ahead of time. Once hired, they’ll also help you prepare for your home study and connect you with the next player, the social worker.

Social Worker – This person’s main objective is to operate in the best interests of the child being adopted. However, they can also become a major advocate for the adoptive family and help you get through the home study process. Communicate early and often with your social worker to develop a comfortable relationship that will benefit your family throughout the entire adoption process.

Birth Parents – Depending on if you have an open, semi-open, or closed adoption, the birth parents of your child could play a long role in your child’s life. Make sure you ask the tough questions up front about their background and wishes for the future to avoid conflict or miscommunication. Some adoptive families maintain regular contact with the birth mother while others choose to let the child make that decision later in life. Either way, there’s a good chance that your child’s biological mother will be a part of your life for years to come.

Other Adoptive Parents – These are the people who have been there before and can answer any questions you may have. Adoptive parents often form a close network among other families to exchange stories, give advice and share contacts. Your agency or local church is a good place to get connected with other adoptive families.

Family and Friends – The adoption process can be long and tough to handle, at times. It’s important to surround yourself with family and friends for emotional strength. Make sure these people support your decision to adopt and are willing to act as a sounding board for you throughout the journey.

A strong adoption team will make all the difference on the journey that you’re about to begin and a team is only as strong as its weakest player. Do your due diligence on the front-end so you can move forward knowing that you have a firm foundation to build on.

Written by Foundling Guest Blogger, Samantha, Director of Arts at Camp Felix

I feel grateful and fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work at Camp Felix, an overnight summer camp for children in New York City’s child foster care system. I was able to connect with the campers in a way that was fun and exciting but, more importantly, moving and inspiring!

Campers were always stopping by my Arts cabin, even when their cabin wasn’t officially on the schedule. Campers get to pick “electives” during the summer (this means they can pick any activity they want to do during the day) and my electives were always filled with kids- so much so that I had to open the door so that they could work on their projects on my cabin’s front lawn. They’d come early, stay late, stop by during their rest hour after dinner, and even ask to come by in lieu of other planned evening activities (especially ones that were loud and crowded because it helped calm their anxiety).  So, even during my “down time,” I frequently found myself doing art with a few campers but I did so willingly because I knew that our time together was already so limited. They’re also really cute, persuasive, and hard to resist.

The summer 2016 season of camp may be over, but I think about the memories that were created every day. I smile and light up when I think back at the conversations between the campers and I and feel really proud of the ways in which we were able to learn from each other. Some positive things I heard included:

“Today was the best day of my life.”

“I didn’t get any sleep last night because I was so excited to go to camp.”

“I actually had fun!” (from a very shy, first-time camper after the dance party)

“I wish you were my art teacher at school.”

There was a moment where the youngest girls’ cabin spontaneously broke out into conversation while drawing in which they shared a lot of details from their home life. It was pretty heartbreaking, but I took it as a sign that they felt comfortable enough in the space to share and speak freely. Since a main goal of mine was for them to express what was on their minds, it also warmed my heart. Later, one of the counselors told me that was the first time she had ever heard any of them talk about their home lives.

The Employment Transition and Support Program helps individuals with disabilities prepare for employment. Participants gain meaningful and professional experience by engaging in different work experiences—we call this a discovery phase.

The required tasks compliment and challenge their abilities and give participants a sense of pride and accomplishment while allowing them to identify their dream job. Paired with a job coach and an employment seminar, participants gain the confidence to explore new opportunities and develop the skills necessary to become valuable assets to potential employers.

Participants must be 16 years old (or older) to participate. For more information please email I&R@nyfoundling.orgClick here to complete a referral form.

Camp Felix hosted their annual Open House earlier this month for campers and their families, as well as friends, supporters and staff from The New York Foundling. Camp Felix is located in Putnam Valley, NY, an hour north of New York City.

This year’s Open House included field games, a BBQ, and a talent show put on by campers and staff. This year was particularly special as Camp Felix celebrated its 10th anniversary and the atmosphere was overflowing with happiness and excitement!

Rebekah Dopp, Anthony Gallo and Sr. Carol Barnes from The Foundling’s Board of Trustees and Haley Wright, Denis Torlic, Caroline Udelhofen, Chris Arnell, Amanda Barstow, Christine Stokes, Christopher Leake, and Amanda Elsbree from the Junior Board joined the fun by hanging out with campers while participating in cabin activities such as making arts & crafts, playing recreational games, and helping campers rehearse their talent show acts for the evening. After the busy activity-oriented day, all settled down to enjoy an amazing BBQ spread donated by Boar’s Head. The Foundling’s President and CEO Bill Baccaglini, spent the day connecting with campers and reminded them how special it is to be given the opportunity to attend camp and spend time in the great outdoors.

In the days leading up to the Open House and right up to the very moment of going on stage, campers and staff rehearsed their talent show acts. Each act was unique in that it reflected their personalities and their day-to-day lives. The show consisted of a medley of talents: dances were performed in the styling of stepping, hip hop and even a rendition of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, popular songs from the radio were sung acapella as well classic songs accompanied by the guitar, and original poems were written and recited that evening. For some of the campers, it was the first time performing such talents, but all acts were well received and accompanied with multiple rounds of applause and cheer. If there was ever a place to debut one’s talent, Camp Felix is one of the most welcoming and encouraging environments to do so.  It was an inspiring and magical day where all could gather in the Camp Felix community and truly live in the moment.

This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to intern with AT&T. This was by far the best opportunity that anyone could ever ask for. It was more than an insight to working in the real world. I had the opportunity to shadow individuals in multiple positions.

I was able to work closely with the Director of Market Sales, the New York and New Jersey Market Director, the Corporate Director of AT&T, Directors of Sales, Retail Sales Consultants and Area Retail Sales Managers. I was placed into a position where I was able to experience AT&T at various levels. I learned both the different and similar skill sets at each position. This also allowed me to learn about AT&T from both a corporate and retail standpoint.

From Microsoft Excel, to corporate mapping for company cars, and even basic skills such as how Retail Sales Consultants interact with domestic as well as international customers, it was a true learning experience.

Towards the end of the internship we were all given a project. My project consisted of visiting AT&T retail stores in the New York and New Jersey area. I visited twenty- two stores in the Manhattan and Queens area. While I was visiting I observed numerous aspects of the store, ranging from the upkeep of the store, to the sales pitches during each customer interaction and even how each customer was greeted as they entered the store. I took data from each of these stores along with the data the other interns had collected and made a presentation containing information about nearly sixty stores. This internship was truly amazing!

Recently I was notified that I was selected for the new AT&T College Ambassador Program. I can’t wait to blog about this upcoming experience!

What is better than a cool, refreshing beverage on a warm day? How about a cool refreshing beverage with tons of health benefits!? As with most of the things we eat, the best way to know the exact ingredients in your smoothie is to make it yourself. All you need is a blender, fresh or frozen produce and a liquid base. Let’s get started!

Choose a flavor scheme that you like. Maybe you want more of a tropical, piña colada type smoothie with those Caribbean fruits like pineapple, mango, or coconut? Maybe you are the adventurous type and are willing to throw in some greens and other veggies to add health benefits and flavor? Or maybe you are a classic smoothie drinker who likes the simple and traditional taste of strawberries and bananas?

Select a base. Low fat cow’s milk, soy milk, almond milk, or Greek yogurt are great additions to give your smoothie a creamier feel. These components will add protein, calcium and Vitamin D to your drink. Water is a good option too; you’ll hydrate your body without adding extra calories.

Throw in some fruit and veggies. Always be mindful of portion control, as too much fruit can add too many calories to your healthy snack. Fresh or frozen fruits will add vital nutrients like Vitamin C, potassium, antioxidants and folate. You may be surprised to find that you like some vegetables blended into your smoothie – and your body will thank you! The classic blendable veggies like spinach, kale and carrots provide low calorie flavor packed with Vitamins C & A and fiber.

Now let’s get creative: A teaspoon of ground flax seed or chia seeds will contribute to our growing list of smoothie health benefits by supplying omega – 3 essential fatty acids, magnesium, and phosphorous. Honey and agave are good natural sweeteners when used in moderation. Other natural flavors that pair great in smoothies are mint leaves, cinnamon or fresh ground ginger!

Fresh smoothies filled with fruits and veggies provide tons of essential nutrients that help nourish our bodies, strengthen our immune systems, and keep us energized. Many might be hesitant to throw some vegetables in their drinks, but adding different colored produce means more vitamins, minerals, and fiber! Do your body a flavor… I mean favor! Add a fresh, homemade smoothie to your daily routine!

The 2016 Rio Olympics are well underway with the United States having won 19 medals, China with 13 medals, and Australia with 8 medals so far—but have you tuned into the Camp Felix Olympics?

Last week, the Camp Felix Olympic Opening Ceremony began with each cabin being assigned a country and given the challenge to present to the entire camp unique facts about their appointed country while also exhibiting their cabin-made banner, cheer and dance. The Camp Felix flag was raised and the Olympic torch was passed to each cabin—it’s a tradition at Camp Felix for every single camper to touch and pass along the torch until it reaches the last camper, in which the ceremony concludes. But where the Opening Ceremony comes to an end, the games begin!

The day is spent with two countries (cabins) competing against each other at the various Olympic games stations. The stations consist of fun and high energy activities such as pool races, basketball tournaments, ring toss and other sports. There was even a water balloon stomping competition!  At the closing ceremony, each country (cabin) was honored with awards and medals for their individual accomplishments and sportsmanship.

Tune in next week to hear about Camp Felix’s Open House which includes a special BBQ and talent show put on by the campers. Click here to learn more about Camp Felix from a recent article on Patch.com!

Camp Felix in Putnam Valley, New York, is well into its second session of the summer, and campers are having a fantastic time!  Their days have been filled with making new friends and enjoying new experiences. From playing field games and swimming all day, to the evening activities where campers have choreographed their own dances and have played dress-up—it’s clear; everyone is having fun! We’ve posted the latest pictures from Camp Felix on Facebook (click here to view the album).

Camp Felix provides a sense of stability and security, which many of our campers so often lack in their lives, and allows them the opportunity to safely take risks to grow and succeed. Kids from New York City’s child welfare system – many of whom have never been in a pool – learn how to swim, and participate in activities that build self-confidence, resilience, and feelings of community.

Tune in next week when campers and staff host Camp Felix’s Open House on August 10. Campers’ families and friends are invited to attend the annual BBQ and talent show. Click here to read about last year’s Open House in an article published by The Journal News.
