BNY Mellon is the oldest continuously operating financial institution in the United States and on November 1, The Foundling will present Karen Peetz, President of BNY Mellon, with our 2016 Corporate Citizenship Award at our 2nd annual Fall Fête taking place at The Prince George Ballroom in New York City!

BNY Mellon is a global investments company, servicing and managing assets in support of a vision to improve lives through investing. But perhaps you didn’t know these fun facts about the company:

  • BNY Mellon was established in 1784 by Alexander Hamilton—they’re older than The Foundling!
  • In 1792 The New York Stock Exchange opened. BNY Mellon was the first company traded.
  • BNY Mellon encourages its employees to give back to their communities around the world through individual donations, nonprofit board service and skills-based and team-oriented volunteering and fundraising. They have a global disaster relief program to help countries get back on their feet after tragedy strikes.
  • And best of all…with support from BNY Mellon, The Foundling is ensuring the success of New York City’s foster youth as they age out of care, most recently with the launch of our technology and workforce development programs.

Join The Foundling and BNY Mellon on November 1 for an evening of fun for a great cause! There will be performances by Haven Kids Rock, The Alex Minasian Jazz Trio and of course, we will be celebrating BNY Mellon!

Tickets, digital advertisements and sponsorship packages are still available and can be purchased here.

Today The New York Foundling and She’s the First are announcing the launch of a new movement, “Adopt a Cause.” The initiative encourages businesses that have offices with extra space to temporarily “adopt” smaller nonprofits (organizations with 10 or fewer employees) and share their office space, at virtually no cost to the small nonprofit.[i]

At 147 years old, The Foundling is one of New York City’s oldest and largest child welfare organizations, providing a wide range of services to more than 30,000 children and families each year. They are teaming up with She’s the First, a younger organization in the nonprofit space, that has a mission to help educate women and girls around the world by providing scholarships, mentorship opportunities and empowerment initiatives to girls in low-income countries.

The two organizations partnered at the beginning of 2016, when The Foundling began serving as a “host” to She’s the First in their Manhattan offices, providing access to desk space, phones, technology support, conference space, and storage. The partnership encompasses mentorship opportunities as well as physical resources. The Foundling staff have provided business advice to She’s the First employees on topics such as how to implement more effective human resources processes, while She’s the First staff have provided The Foundling with valuable insight around social media, including their inaugural social media campaign to raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month. Their collaboration demonstrates the positive and mutually beneficial impact that this movement will have on participating organizations across the country.

“The skyrocketing cost of real estate around the country is creating a sad reality—nonprofits are needed now more than ever, but they increasingly cannot afford offices in the communities they serve. Adopt a Cause tackles this unacceptable reality one partnership at a time,” said Bethany Lampland, Chief Operating Officer, The New York Foundling.

“Our success story is not meant to be an anomaly,” said Tammy Tibbetts, CEO of She’s the First. “We want to share what we’ve done so other nonprofits can reap the same benefits and have the same transformative growth.”

“We are thrilled to have been a part of the creation of the Adopt a Cause movement.  The New York Foundling has gained invaluable experience by working alongside the passionate and driven staff at She’s the First, and we’re proud to help another nonprofit grow,” stated Bill Baccaglini, President and CEO of The New York Foundling.

At their annual Mentor  Breakfast on November 17, She’s the First will honor The New York Foundling as partners, presenting Bethany Lampland, Chief Operating Officer, and Morgan McCray, Manager of Business Operations, with an award for “Mentorship Duo of the Year.”

Lampland and Tibbetts first met 18 months ago and developed the Adopt a Cause movement inspired by their work together. The event in November will bring together mentors and mentees from various organizations to celebrate the impact that they have on each other’s lives and raise money for She’s the First initiatives.

[i] Adopt a Cause is intended to be a pro-bono partnership. Parties can decide together if a nominal financial contribution to defray attendant costs should be put into place.

In 1869, Sister Mary Irene Fitzgibbon, along with two other Sisters of Charity opened the doors of a Manhattan brownstone on East 12th Street. She placed a cradle outside the door as a beacon to welcome and save the lives of babies being abandoned in the streets of New York City. Thus began the tremendous legacy of The New York Foundling.

Today, 147 years later, we celebrate our history and our ‘birthday’.  Like the various needs of New Yorkers which have grown over the past years, The New York Foundling has evolved into an organization that responds to these challenges and serves the diverse wants of numerous vulnerable populations.

The Foundling provides over 20 different services to 30,000 children, families and individuals each year. From adoption and foster care to child abuse prevention, as well as operating an overnight summer camp and a special charter school in the Bronx, our nearly 2,000 employees are making a tremendous impact across New York City 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Here’s to many more years supporting and caring for children, families, and individuals in need!

The New York Foundling announced today a joint partnership with The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) aimed at helping both organizations achieve a greater impact in the field of child welfare and maltreatment across the United States. Along with the opening of The Foundling’s upcoming exhibit “A story of Hope, Healing and Resiliency: Understanding and Preventing Child Maltreatment” on September 29, this new union furthers The Foundling’s commitment to educating the public about the issue of child abuse and neglect.

The Foundling formed the Vincent J. Fontana Center for Child Protection in 1997, which has since grown to become a national leader in the field of child-welfare and works to improve the public’s knowledge and attitude toward child abuse and neglect.

The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children is the nation’s leading organization supporting professionals who serve children and families affected by child maltreatment and violence. As a multidisciplinary group of professionals, they provide expert training and educational activities, policy leadership and collaboration, and consultation that emphasizes evidence-based principles in order to meet their overall goals of preventing child maltreatment and educating the public.

“Over the last 30 years, there has been no single group that has contributed more to our understanding of the causes, consequences, and treatment of child abuse and neglect than the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children,” stated Bill Baccaglini, President and CEO of The New York Foundling. “The Foundling is committed to improving the outcomes for those we serve with educational programs and expanded use of evidence-based practices. We are thrilled to join forces with a group such as APSAC, as this will provide a platform to help us reduce the incidence of child maltreatment across the country.”

Both The Foundling’s Fontana Center and APSAC serve as hubs of information geared toward building public awareness on child abuse and neglect. This partnership will help both groups to collectively work toward achieving a world without child abuse, neglect and maltreatment through educational and public advocacy initiatives.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand nominated The New York Foundling as a 2016 Angels in Adoption® honoree. The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) organizes the Angels in Adoption® Program, and honored The New York Foundling at an awards ceremony on September 20, 2016 and gala on September 21, 2016 in Washington, D.C.

Senator Gillibrand recognized our extensive work to keep families together, prevent abuse and neglect, provide academic support for children, and give people with developmental disabilities the tools and training they need to lead stable, fulfilling and independent lives. We care for nearly 10 percent of New York City’s foster care population, and provide prevention services from our crisis nursery, to juvenile justice initiatives, to family therapy support.

“It was an honor to represent The New York Foundling during the Angels in Adoption Pin Ceremony. Families and individuals were recognized for their commitment to providing permanent families for children in the child welfare system. During our time in Washington, we were able to network and secure additional resources for the families we serve and support. This entire experience has been energizing, exciting and inspiring,” said Carmen Jirau-Rivera, Chief Program Officer at The New York Foundling

“It is an incredible honor to be nominated by Senator Gillibrand for the 2016 Angels in Adoption® award,” said Bill Baccaglini, President and CEO, The New York Foundling. “Over the last 147 years, The Foundling has developed a very deep understanding of the issues that surround foster care and adoption, and from our on-the-ground experience, we’ve crafted a thoughtful and evidence-based approach to how we can best support these children and families that is continuously being refined to meet their needs.”

The Angels in Adoption® Program is CCAI’s signature public awareness event and provides an opportunity for all members of the U.S. Congress to honor the good work of their constituents who have enriched the lives of foster children and orphans in the United States and abroad. This year, more than 140 “Angels” are being honored through the Angels in Adoption® Program.

“The Angels in Adoption® Program is a unique annual opportunity in the nation’s Capital to shine a well-deserved spotlight on the power of adoption and the unspoken heroes who have made the dream of a family a reality for children. Since the program’s inception, over 2,500 Angels have come to Washington to share their firsthand adoption experiences with Members of Congress, highlighting its joys, as well as the barriers encountered in the process,” said Becky Weichhand, Executive Director at CCAI.

This year’s National Angels in Adoption® honoree is the Minnesota Vikings. Former National Angels include Korie and Willie Robertson, Shonda Rhimes, Deborra-Lee Furness Jackman, First Lady Laura Bush, Patti LaBelle, Jane Seymour, Muhammad Ali, the late Dave Thomas, Steven Curtis Chapman, Bruce Willis, Alonzo Mourning, Rhea Perlman and Kristin Chenoweth.

This week we raise awareness and celebrate International Week of the Deaf (Sept 19-25)!

Since 1982, The Foundling’s Deaf Services program has dedicated itself to empowering children and families who are a part of the Deaf or hard of hearing community. It is New York City’s only preventive program serving the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and is available to individuals and families in all five boroughs.  Our team has a unique expertise in providing culturally competent direct services, in American Sign Language (ASL), while also promoting equal accessibility and accommodation for clients throughout the community.
