Young women who are pregnant or parenting while in foster care face numerous obstacles to a happy, healthy, and independent future for themselves and their children. The Foundling’s Mother and Child Program provides a home and comprehensive supports for young mothers in foster care and their children.

Soon after The Foundling opened, we began to welcome new mothers to live in our headquarters to help them as they learned parenting skills and got on their feet. Today, the Mother and Child Program is The Foundling’s only residential program for young people in foster care, and it works to build the skills and supports that young mothers need in order to move into their own homes with a strong circle of support, and help them to make parenting decisions that allow themselves and their children to thrive. Operating in The Bronx, the program helps teach vital parenting skills and builds independence. The young women in our program are provided with continuous support from full-time staff as they learn the skills they will need to find employment, ensure their children grow up well, and to manage their family’s needs. With the care and assistance of The Foundling’s trained staff, the young women in our mother and child program pursue educational and personal goals while learning how to care for their infants and toddlers in preparation for a successful transition to independent living.

Success Stories

Creating a Better Future for Her Family

Oumou left Guinea as a young teenager, escaping the risk of an arranged marriage. Soon after arriving in the United States she became pregnant, and the relative she was living with told her she was no longer welcome in his house. Fortunately, she was referred to The Foundling’s residential program for pregnant and parenting teens in foster care, where she was welcomed with open arms. Today, with help from our staff, Oumou is creating a better future for her family.
