Mott Haven Academy Charter School

Camp Felix Early Head Start Fostering College Success Initiative Head Start Mentored Internship Program Mott Haven Academy Charter School Road to Success Road to Success Citywide

The Foundling launched Haven Academy to respond to the unique educational needs of children involved in foster care or whose families are involved in the child welfare system. The school utilizes a specialized trauma-sensitive curriculum that is helping to close the achievement gap for child welfare-involved youth.

Located in the Mott Haven community of The Bronx, Haven Academy is a public charter school that is open to the general public, but admissions prioritize children whose families are involved in the child welfare system. The school’s mission is to empower children in an educational environment that addresses and reduces the barriers to academic success through the integration of family support services with a rigorous, college-preparatory academic program. The school’s specially trained and highly committed teachers are able to access resources to support every scholar’s unique needs, such as social workers who know the child’s family situation, or a pediatric nurse practitioner who can provide comprehensive medical care. The rigorous academic program also exposes children to art, culture and expression – at the same time providing social services that support the entire child – as staff members work to ensure that scholars will be resilient, resourceful, and well-equipped to reach their full potential. Success Stories

Kalvin & his Family Find Strength and Support

Last year, Kalvin, a 3rd grade scholar at The Foundling’s Mott Haven Academy Charter School, was diagnosed with leukemia. After undergoing emergency surgery and starting cancer treatment, COVID-19 hit their community. Kalvin and his family found it difficult to balance medical visits and emotionally cope with the fear and uncertainty, all while adapting to remote education and the other challenges that came with the pandemic.

From the beginning, however, Haven Academy was there to guide the family along their new and uncharted path. The K-8 charter school, which combines a trauma-informed curriculum with social services that address the needs of the whole family, was uniquely positioned to provide a helping hand. Haven teachers worked with Kalvin’s parents to address his academic needs, ensuring that Kalvin received high-quality instruction that accommodated his schedule. School staff provided emotional support, ensuring that Kalvin and his family always had a listening ear. When the family found that their living situation – an apartment in a poorly maintained complex – posed health issues and complications to Kalvin’s recovery, The Foundling supported them in finding a new home. With The Foundling at their side, Kalvin and his family are hopeful for the future – and know they can work through any obstacles along the road ahead.
