  • AGES SERVED:

Children and adolescents ages 0-21 that are in foster care with The Foundling

Placement in foster care can be difficult for children – adjusting to family separation, unfamiliar environments, and new caregivers can often lead to mental health difficulties, which require specialized treatment.

Our clinical Mental Health Services program serves all young people in The Foundling’s foster care program, and is staffed by psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists who have expert knowledge in the issues often faced by children in foster care. All mental health services are tailored to the needs of children and families, and include:

  • Mental Heath Screenings
  • Measuring Developmental Milestones in Young Children
  • Psychological and Psychiatric Evaluations
  • Medication Management
  • Psychotherapy

Our team provides treatments that are not typically provided in community mental health clinics, including evidence-based trauma therapy and interventions that facilitate family reunification.

Success Stories

Denisha Pursues Her Dreams

After enduring physical violence at home and battling chronic depression, Denisha left home at age 14 and spent her teenage years in foster care. As Denisha approached her 18th birthday, she sought more independence – a transition that is hard for young people in foster care, who often lack a traditional support system.

Through our Supportive Housing program, Denisha was able to address her mental health needs, learn important life skills, become financially stable, and pursue her educational aspirations. The Foundling was Denisha’s safety net as she learned the skills she needed to succeed on her own. This year, Denisha completed a Master’s program in early childhood education, was hired as a full-time 1st grade teacher, and recently moved into her own apartment. With The Foundling’s continued guidance, Denisha is excited for the next stage of her journey, and looks forward to what the future will bring.
