Juvenile & Criminal Justice

Recognizing Emerging Adults & Creating Hope

Adolescent Mentoring Program Families Rising Kids Experiencing Young Successes Recognizing Emerging Adults & Creating Hope

The Foundling’s Recognizing Emerging Adults & Creating Hope (REACH) program works with young adults to avoid involvement with the juvenile or criminal justice system, promote positive mental health, foster positive relationships, and work toward positive educational and career goals. This evidence-based program pairs young people with both a Therapist and Skills Coach – a model that not only addresses a participant’s current situation and needs, but simultaneously provides the tools and resources to build a promising future.

The REACH program uses the evidence-based Multisystemic Therapy – Emerging Adult (MST-EA) model, which is specifically targeted to those involved in the juvenile justice system, to promote positive outcomes for young people ages 17-21 living in Brooklyn and Queens. Geared toward adolescents and young adults with prior justice involvement or are at high risk for negative outcomes, this individual-based program works with the participant to identify challenges and promote positive goals.

Success Stories

Elizabeth Finds her Voice through Art

For many people with developmental disabilities, it can be difficult to express oneself through language and actions. In our Day Habilitation programs, we work to elevate the voices of our participants, and provide them with meaningful tools for self-expression and fulfillment. Through art workshops - from photography to poetry - many of our participants found that art provided a novel way to truly share their voices and experiences with the world. "Art makes me feel terrific and excellent," says Elizabeth, who shared many of her photographs in our 2022 art exhibition. "I feel happy. I learned about myself."
