Each year, more than 250,000 children in the United States enter the foster care system. While many will be reunited with their families or adopted, about 10 percent will “age out,” depending on the state they live in, and suddenly be on their own. The New York Foundling, along with a number of other organizations across the country, is working to develop programs to improve these statistics. One such program, Road to Success, provides tutors, specially trained by The Foundling, to work with students, many of whom have struggled with trauma or abandonment issues. An Olympic gymnast is quickly becoming an inspiration to many adopted children. Thirteen-year-old Elishama Collado was adopted as a baby through The New York Foundling. She says she dreams of playing in the WNBA and becoming an elite athlete like Olympian Simone Biles, who is also adopted. READ MORE.

Destiny Paradiso discovered important pieces to her personality as a young girl at Camp Felix in Putnam Valley. Now 17 and a volunteer at the camp for foster care children from New York City, she’s hoping to help other young girls do the same. Paradiso has spent part of 10 summers at the Camp Felix, which is hosted by The New York Foundling and The Felix Organization. Nearly 200 campers ages 8-13 visit the facility each year to enjoy swimming, recreation, music, dance, nature exploration and the usual assortment of summer camp activities. Camp Felix is known for helping children in the foster care and child welfare system. Tucked away in Putnam Valley is a safe haven for New York City’s children in foster care and the child welfare system. Every summer, the team at The New York Foundling, along with our partners at The Felix Organization, provide a carefree experience to hundreds of children who many never have had the opportunity to travel outside of the city or even out of their borough.
