Camp Felix is looking for energetic and enthusiastic staff members to help create an unforgettable experience this summer!

Camp Felix brings campers and counselors together for an adventure that changes their outlook on life and the future, as well as their sense of pride. We’ve seen through the years how campers are able to immerse themselves in activities that instill feelings of self-confidence, resilience, respect, and community.

2022’s Camp Felix will be held in Sandyston, New Jersey, at Camp Linwood MacDonald. This well-appointed campground, nestled in rural Sussex County, features 220+ acres of  lake, ponds, fields, and forests and numerous amenities for campers, including:

  • A lake for swimming
  • Boating and fishing
  • Hiking trails and zipline
  • Rock climbing and ropes course
  • Archery and sports fields/courts
  • Outdoor amphitheater
  • Arts and crafts facilities

Applications are open for a number of positions at a variety of levels and skillsets – including Director of Youth Engagement & Recreation, Camp Counselors (male and female), and more.

Camp will run from August 8 – August 26 (3 Weeks, Monday – Friday). Staff training will take place from August 1 – August 5 in New York City, and from August 6 – 7 onsite at camp.

Many staff positions require living on-site on the weekdays that camp is in session.

Camp Counselor – Responsibilities and Requirements

Camp Counselors work under direct supervision of the Unit Leader to achieve Camp Felix goals and objectives by delivering a safe, fun and enriching summer camp program that helps Camp Felix campers build positive relationships, learn new skills, improve their self-esteem and develop healthy habits.

Duties Include:

  • Supervising campers during all activities, meals, shower time, and lights out. Participating in activities with them, and encourage them to participate as much as possible (i.e. arts & crafts, sports, hiking, dance, music, theater, swimming, etc).
  • Helping campers grow and develop by providing positive reinforcement, guidance, support and care.
  • Utilizing positive and supportive techniques and strategies to resolve problems and enforce discipline among campers.

Requirements Include:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a High School or GED diploma.
  • Must have knowledge of or experience working in summer camps.
  • Must have experience working with children in some capacity, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Exhibit qualities such as patience, kindness, honestly, responsibility, compassion, and desire to help others.
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with the issues/needs of children involved in the child welfare system preferred.

Director of Youth Engagement & Recreation – Responsibilities and Requirements

The Director of Youth Engagement & Recreation is a unique year-round role that combines summer camp and recreational program operations with special event planning and youth development across various child welfare programs at the New York Foundling.

The position is part-time (3 days/week) from September through June and full-time during the months of July and August.

Duties Include:

  • Planning for the Camp Felix summer season:
    • Assisting with Camp Felix program planning and creating the camp schedule prior to camp start
    • Recruiting and interview Camp Felix staff members to work at summer camp (approx. 35 staff)
    • Assisting with camper recruitment and application process, maintain online database of participating campers
  • Managing Camp Felix (while camp is in session):
    • Providing direct supervision to Assistant Director, Arts and Crafts Director, Athletic Director, Health Director and Social Worker
    • Managing all day-to-day camp operations at camp
  • Event planning for Foundling youth (outside of the summer camp season):
    • Planning and implementing engaging, fun and interesting events based on topics relevant to Foundling youth – including field trips and holiday parties/celebrations
    • Designing and leading a Youth Council program which will engage youth in leadership development and advisory group activities

Requirements Include:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Must be at least 25 years old.
  • Must have the following experience:
    • At least 24 months of administrative/supervisory experience in a summer camp setting (Director role or equivalent)
    • Prior experience and/or solid knowledge and understanding of the needs of children in the child welfare system.
    • Proven track record of engaging children and youth in recreational activities and programs
    • Strong event planning ability focusing on youth related special events
