Ruth Gerson, MD

Senior Vice President, Mental Health Services
Senior Staff

As Senior Vice President for Mental Health Services at The New York Foundling, Dr. Gerson oversees the psychiatric and mental health services for youth in foster care and for those youth and families served in our Article 31 clinic, the Home for Integrated Behavioral Health.

Dr. Gerson also teaches at the NYU School of Medicine, where she is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Prior to joining the Foundling, Dr. Gerson was the Director of the NYC Health & Hospitals/Bellevue Children’s Comprehensive Psychiatry Emergency Program. She is nationally recognized as an expert in child psychiatric emergencies and in trauma-informed crisis services for youth, and is the co-editor of two books, Beyond PTSD: Helping and Healing Teens Exposed to Trauma, and Helping Kids in Crisis: Managing Psychiatric Emergencies in Children and Adolescents, as well as several articles and book chapters on these topics.

Dr. Gerson received her Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and her M.D. degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.  She completed her Adult Psychiatry training at the Cambridge Health Alliance and her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry training at NYU Langone Health.
