The Foundling’s programs for adults with developmental disabilities were created in response to the needs of these individuals who have grown up in our care, and who require long term residential care.

Created in collaboration with the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD), we operate two types of residential facilities in the Bronx and in Westchester and Rockland Counties:

Community-based residences for consumers who are higher functioning and capable of more independent activities. A high number of consumers volunteer or hold part-time jobs, and are contributing members of the community. The Foundling operates 17 IRAs in the Bronx, one in Westchester and one in Rockland.

Provide 24-hour supervised care to those consumers who are lower functioning and more physically challenged than those who live in the IRAs. Recently, we expanded our capacity to provide barrier-free living to consumers who are either non-ambulatory or ambulate with difficulty and present significant medical problems. The Foundling operates four ICFs in Rockland County and two in Westchester.

Consumers live in these comfortable, nurturing residences with devoted, compassionate staff. On a daily basis, consumers attend a variety of programs in the community to promote healthy and dignified lives. By recognizing the broad range of individual needs, The Foundling is able to focus and implement a person-centered care plan for each consumer.

How to Access these Services

In order to be considered for The Foundling’s Services for Adults with Developmental Disabilities, a consumer is usually referred to The Foundling by a regional or state Office of OMRDD, or by a health or social service agency. If you are inquiring on behalf of a family member or client, Foundling staff will help you assess the consumer’s needs, gather the appropriate information and navigate the application process.
