Keep The Foundling's After School Program Alive For Children in the Child Welfare System

In September 2008, The New York Foundling opened Mott Haven Academy Charter School in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district in the United States.  Our goal and mission were clear: Reduce the barriers to academic success that have long-plagued children in the child welfare system by providing comprehensive social services to students and their families – all within the same building where they attend school.

Now in its fourth year, Haven Academy’s students are flourishing. The New York Foundling After-School Program at Haven Academy is a key component of this model.  The Program provides enrichment activities, academic skill-building and character development to 100% of the school population. Parents workshops, also offered within the program, help parents to grow personally and professionally so they can better support their children’s achievement and begin to break the cycle of poverty so many of them face. With funding cuts anticipated, this program will have to cut back on its services in the coming years.  Help us retain key after-school staff members and continue to provide comprehensive after-school programming to our students and families
