Jane's Story
Jane was homeless and living on the streets for six months before she heard about Project Turning Point. She and her mother were evicted from their small apartment because they couldn't pay rent. Her mother found shelter with friends, but there was not enough room for 18-year-old Jane. With nowhere else to turn, she found herself abandoned on the dangerous streets of New York City. She heard about Project Turning Point through an outreach campaign and asked us to help. Jane was a hard worker. When she entered the program she had two jobs, but couldn't seem to save money toward independent living. Project Turning Point counselors taught her budgeting skills and developed a fixed savings plan that taught her to save and manage money. She also attended independent living skills groups at the shelter where she learned to efficiently hunt for jobs and apartments, utilize public transportation, and manage a household with cooking, cleaning, and laundry skills. She secured a room to rent and opened a saving account. Jane is no longer staying at Project Turning Point, but she is no longer alone. With our continued support she is living her own life on her own terms.
