Last year, The Foundling teamed up with its Long Island City neighbor, the Breadbox Cafe, to serve the community in a different way. The Breadbox Café, at 47-11 11th St., has been selling hundreds of personalized rolling pins – dubbed “doughstix” – that will permanently adorn its façade. Proceeds from their sale have been supporting The Foundling’s tutoring programs for youth in foster care, a population that historically falls behind their counterparts academically.
Now we have a "new knead."
With the help of the Breadbox Cafe and other caring neighbors, we are raising money to replace the "discharge grants" that have been eliminated by City budget cuts - grants that ensure families have the food, clothing and bedding to properly welcome their children home from foster care. The “doughstix” are available for purchase at four different price points, corresponding to more prominent placement on the façade. Prices begin at $50.
